About
The second largest city in Egypt: Famed for lighthouses, libraries, and Cleopatra’s footprints; a seaport and river delta, a popular escape to salt air for inland Egyptians. Named for a conqueror, built atop catacombs. An English tour book once described it as a flyover, as “the most historic city in the world with the least to show for it.” Lighthouses crumble, libraries burn. For tourists it may be one thing, but for others it is home.
